In the first part of our gig worker advice series we spoke with a Shiftgig Specialist who shared how “being your own brand” leads to success in the gig economy. In the second installment of this series we sat down with a Specialist who has been picking up hospitality and experiential marketing shifts since 2014. Because of her broad experience, she’s learned valuable tips she wants to share with other gig workers.
ALWAYS BE PREPARED
This Specialist highly recommends reading the details in the shift description. “Anything that’s in the shift description or the uniform description, always bring it. Even if it seems silly.” She recalled one shift where the description asked her to bring a crumber but she forgot it. She learned that day how important this tool is to banquet service.
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
Since she was new to serving, this specialist used her commute to watch banquet service videos and ran through the motions in her head to ensure a seamless service. “You’ll feel more confident knowing exactly what you’re doing, even if you have to read up on stuff on your way there.” Regardless of the position you’re working, everyone can benefit from brushing up on their skills.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
“Before a shift I would look up the client so I know what type of company I’m working with,” she says. “This also helps make sure you’re comfortable with what type of event you’re working.” Familiarizing yourself with the client shows you’re invested in your job, and you’ll feel ready to get to work right away.
